The Integrated Ocean
Drilling Program (IODP) will end in 2013. The scientific community will
meet in September 2009 to develop the principal scientific rationale for a new
program of scientific ocean drilling to replace IODP starting in 2013 (INVEST
meeting, see www.marum.de/iodp-invest.html). Immediately following
this meeting, a group of 10-12 outstanding scientists will be selected and
charged with writing a science plan for the new program. We seek nominations of
trusted colleagues with the ability to provide scientific vision and leadership
and the time to devote to this critical effort in the year following INVEST.
Ideally, the final team will have a good balance of scientific expertise,
nationality and gender, and will range from highly respected mentors from
within Earth, ocean and life sciences to early- or mid-career scientists with
proven strength in scientific advocacy.
The new science plan will
need to excel at the highest level of external review, and take ocean drilling
into a new era of innovative scientific endeavor. It must address fundamental
and unresolved questions in Earth system sciences, be inclusive to new and
emerging fields of science and methodologies, be open to other global science
initiatives, and demonstrate a clear awareness of societal needs to understand
Earth systems in the 21st century.
For guidance on
potentially high priority themes of the new program, please consult the INVEST program
(http://www.marum.de/INVEST_ct_wg.html). For each nomination, please provide a written
statement (max 200 words) in support of the nominee in relation to the
requirements outlined above. Nominations should be submitted to
no later than October 11, 2009. The
IODP Science Advisory Structure Executive Committee (http://www.iodp.org/sasec/) will
review nominations.
