IODP has
build on the success of the educational activities for various groups,
educators, undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctorates to increase
their knowledge of IODP and science methods conducted during actual ocean
drilling expeditions. IODP Education activities are conducted at the national
level to meet local curricula standards and observe cultural norms.
This program is organized by Deep Earth Academy, the U.S.
education program for IODP. School of Rock is an innovative workshop than
brings educators, scientists and crew together on the JOIDEs Resolution to engage in hands-on activities and research.
The school
offers several technical courses, in particular for undergraduates, graduate
students and early career professionals to provide opportunities to learn about
scientific drilling to improve skills (e.g. visual care description) and to
communicate with J-DESC members.
Since 2007, ECORD has
established a summer school program to further the education of young scientists
in marine-related sciences and to train a new generation to participate in
ocean drilling expeditions in the future. ECORD provides 10 to 15 scholarships
annually.
