The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) explores Earth’s history, structure, dynamics and deep biosphere through seafloor drilling, coring and downhole measurements. The program uses multiple drilling platforms capable of operating in a variety of environments (http://www.iodp.org/io/).
The IODP is scheduled to end in September 2013. An implementation plan will be developed by June 2010, outlining the high priority science that needs to be completed within this current phase of ocean drilling. Truly innovative and scientifically excellent proposals can still be incorporated into the final phase of IODP drilling. Proposals submitted, but not implemented, before the end of the IODP will form an important basis for a new scientific ocean drilling program (2013 – 2023). Proposals for the current phase of IODP should meet the criteria specified in the IODP Initial Science Plan (www.iodp.org/isp), which also may serve as a guideline for proposals targeting post-2013 implementation.
In addition to new and revised full proposals, members of the global science community are encouraged to submit ancillary project letters for taking advantage of targets of opportunity that may arise as the IODP drilling platforms transit within or between expeditions. Preliminary proposals for new and innovative projects that can influence the direction of the new drilling program are also most welcome. The goal is a seamless transition to a new drilling program, which will require an existing base of high quality drilling proposals. Proposals will be evaluated by the IODP Science Advisory Structure (http://www.iodp.org/sas/).
