The Roles of Implementing Organizations in IODP
A First Look at Cross-Platform Integration in a Multi-Platform Scientific Ocean Drilling Program

Meeting Group: Implementing Organizations (IOs)
Place and Dates: Bozeman, Montana, August 19-20, 2003

Summary

Representatives from three Implementing Organizations (IOs) met with the interim director of IODP, liaisons from the Lead Agencies (NSF and MEXT) and SAS, and individuals tasked with summarizing the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) and current planning efforts within SAS to advance the database framework for the new program (see Final Agenda). First, the premise of the meeting and its goals were summarized by the convenor (see Final Agenda). For the remainder of Day 1, each IO team was asked to give one or more presentations (see CDEX, JOI Alliance, and ESO), leading to a general discussion about HSE, data deliverables, technician transfer among platforms, and routine (i.e., day-to-day) engineering development (including downhole measurements). On Day 2, separate presentations about icon databases (421 KB) and the icon OOI (2.66 MB) lead to further, wide-ranging discussions about interfacing IO-specific vs. program-wide data management, coordinating delivery of IO-based engineering with "third-party" (i.e., external to IODP) technical developments, program-wide (i.e., CMO-supported) engineering development, and relationships between the IOs and the CMO. All of these discussions lead to a series of icon resolutions and action items (120 KB). All participants agreed that this type of meeting was worthwhile and should continue, outside (in addition to) the normally scheduled framework of SAS panel meetings. The next IO meeting is tentatively set for Edinburgh in late February, 2004; ESO will host.
