IOs Meeting #2 Agenda Print E-mail
Edinburgh, Scotland, February 27-28, 2004

icon Action Item#1 (1.3 MB): Get the PPSP environmental policy from Barry Katz, Chair of PPSP.

  • Should a set of overarching principles be developed? If so, by IODP-MI?
    • No, by the AI group, to be forwarded to TJ of IODP-MI for implementation to the June meeting of SPC, then to SPPOC and the IODP Council in July.
    • Contacts will remain Kawamura-san, Baldauf and Colin Graham of ESO.
  • Presentation of preservation of deep-sea biodiversity (Kuramoto)
    • Attribute all statements in this .ppt; add scales to pictures.
    • InterRIDGE is working on this problem (Catherine Mevel); find out the details from her.
    • For clearances, this may have to be handled on a case-by-case basis.
    • Action item: present the modified and amplified presentation to SPC in June (which will also hear a presentation from the deep-sea biodiversity community in question), then proceed with the development of program-wide principles, as outlined above. SPC may also decide in June on SAS responses (perhaps with SSP and PPSP) to this question.
icon Action Item #2 (69.5 KB): Rack presented on behalf of Davies: pursue this with Davies, UR/DE and Kuroki-san. Further discussions in April, perhaps for presentation to SPC in June.

icon Action Item #3 (202.5 KB) :Rack presented on behalf of Firth.

Part a): Consolidate the existing cores, as part of the JOI Alliance proposal to NSF. (In the latter phase of ODP, ~10-12 km/yr of core was collected. If this move takes place, ~62 km of core space would be available at the Bremen repository.) This core-moving scenario (Part 1 of the presentation), which will be ready for implementation in FY05 sometime (but which could be initiated in summer 04, Fox) has been fully discussed with SciMP and endorsed in all parts by them. IODP-MI (Talwani) will be proactive about this process (assuming that SPC and SPPOC endorse the process in June and July, respectively), and will implement it in FY05.

Part b): WILL the repositories be tied to the platforms that collect the IODP cores? This was discussed, in the context that the Japanese have made it clear that Chikyu cores will be housed in Kochi (although Jamie Allan maintains that this is not written down anywhere). How to decide? Use the existing procedure (i.e., in place for ODP cores)? GIVE IT TO JANECEK, for expedited decision-making (with SAS members and the IOs) prior to the SPC June meeting. Decision on FY04 IODP cores must be made by June for inclusion in the FY05 PP (Talwani).

icon Action Item #4 (540 KB) Evans: "minimum acceptable" IODP data. Have the SciMP WG reports been incorporated (Murray)? Yes, they have (Evans/Kuramoto, see handout). This group has NOT completely taken the SciMP recs into account (Rack, Baldauf). This was motivated primarily by the need for input to the ESO MSP activity. Add Ursula as a contact proponent.

Timeline (see handout): IOs (contact individuals above) will report to SciMP at their June meeting, SciMP will report to SPC at their August meeting, and SPPOC will receive recommendations on "minimum acceptable" data at their December meeting.

icon Action Item #5 (595.5 KB) : Kawamura-san, in response to very short-term discussions (see spreadsheet).

Have the IOs take one more look at this (Baldauf). The group will revise the spreadsheet, with input from Mike (SPC Chair). Get it ready to submit to SPC in March, as part of its Project Management discussion. Send it to all IODP-MI key personnel before the meeting. Make sure that eventually this is highly publicized to the stakeholder community, the scientists that submit proposals to IODP.

Expedition Naming: presentation by R. Murray. Discussion. General agreement by the group that his presentation is "the way to go." More discussion tomorrow.

Day 2

What to do (re: expedition numbering)? Murray could work with the IOs over the next couple of weeks, en route to a presentation by SciMP at the March SPC meeting.

  • JOI Alliance (Rack) - the solution must be integrated; any scheme must be consistent with curation and database integration, with a view to cost. Recs. from SAS could be turned over to IODP-MI, then form a task group with the IOs.
  • ESO (Colin Graham) - there is no legacy database, but existing databases must be taken into account; consistency is important.
  • CDEX (Kuramoto) - their database is flexible, and they would like to use expedition number and name.
  • But an ISC will not be set up until FY05. Nonetheless, the scheme suggested by Rack is workable.
Consensus: Rick will present this to SPC for discussion, based upon the discussions at this meeting. Consensus MUST be reached at the March SPC meeting.

IOs-only meeting - Evans, see his icon presentation (215 KB).
