Feb. 2, 2009--The IODP-MI Board of Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kiyoshi Suyehiro as the new President of IODP-MI, Inc., effective May 16, 2009. Dr. Suyehiro currently serves as Executive Director of Research at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). He was formerly Professor, Ocean Research Institute, at University of Tokyo. He chairs the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) and is on the Executive Committee of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). He will begin on May 1 as President-Elect, in order to overlap with Dr. Manik Talwani, who will complete five years of service on May 15 as the inaugural President. Dr. Talwani oversaw the development of the program that now operates three drilling platforms: the riser ship Chikyu (Japan), the newly renovated JOIDES Resolution (U.S.), and mission-specific operations (Europe). A renowned geophysicist, Dr. Talwani expanded the international membership of IODP and forged important new relationships with industry. Board of Governors Chair Dr. Ryo Matsumoto commented, "We are fortunate to have recruited such an outstanding individual in Dr. Suyehiro to build upon Dr. Talwani's successes and to lead the next phase of IODP."
