Peter B. Flemings is professor with the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas, where he holds the Jackson Chair in GeoSystems. He received his B.A. degree from Dartmouth College, and both an M.S. degree and Ph.D. in geology from Cornell University. Before joining U.T., Flemings was a professor at Penn State, an associate research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and the Crosby Distinguished Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the study of fluid flow in sedimentary basins.
He has sailed on three ODP/IODP Expeditions. He was Co-Chief Scientist for IODP Expedition 308, ‘Gulf of Mexico Hydrogeology.’ His marine research spans the study of fluid pressure in the Nankai Accretionary Prism, analysis and modeling of hydrate systems on southern Hydrate Ridge, prediction of slope stability on continental margins, and the development of a pore pressure penetrometer for ocean drilling. Over the years Flemings has served as a panel member on SSEPS, SciMP, and EPSP. Most recently, he was chairman of the Engineering Development Panel. Flemings also works closely with industry. He leads the U.T. Geofluids Consortium. At Penn State, he directed the Penn State GeoSystems Initiative, a graduate educational initiative where students work with scientists from both academia and industry in an interdisciplinary mode.
