SAS: Science Advisory Structure

This is a historical page from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. For science planning information for the International Ocean Discovery Program starting October 2013, see the Facility Board page.

During the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, science planning was supported by the Science Advisory Structure (SAS), an independent entity that involved approximately 100 scientists and engineers on five standing committees and panels. IODP Management International formally hosted SAS and supported its activities by managing the submission and review of drilling proposals, assisting committee chairs, and organizing and maintaining public records of SAS activities. The IODP-MI-hosted Operations Task Force (OTF) assists in the planning process by defining fiscally and operationally feasible drilling plans for inclusion in the program's annual science plan.
