DC residents and visitors to the nation’s capitol have an exciting new ocean-centric destination on the National Mall, where the wonders of the ocean and the subseafloor can be explored. Opening on September 27, 2008, at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, Sant Ocean Hall presents hundreds of marine specimens and models, high-definition video experiences, one-of-a kind exhibits, and new technology in the museum’s largest renovation since opening in 1910.

Sant Ocean Hall provides an in-depth look at how scientists know what they know about the Earth. In a portion of the hall called “Journey Through Time,” scientific ocean drilling contributes an illuminating look into how cored samples are culled from below the seafloor and how these samples tell the history of the Earth: its history of climate change, its geodynamic cycles, and the characteristics of the deep biosphere. A large-scale model of the drilling vessel Chikyu anchors the exhibit, providing a look inside the ship and the exciting, ground-breaking research that happens on-board.

Many interactive components of Sant Ocean Hall get you involved in the action.
